Chinese Lanterns are becoming increasingly popular for informal get together's, birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries or even grand opening events for business and commerce. Although it must be remembered that this isn't actually a new phenomenon, as Chinese lanterns have been used for centuries and have a rich history steeped in tradition. The Lanterns were originally used by the Chinese as a functional tool in times of war. Troops would initiate them as signals to send airborne messages to each other. They would rise in the air to alert the friendly troops of danger or to inform them all was well. In peace time, the use of Chinese Lanterns became popular for making 'wishes' as farmers would often use them to help bless their crops or to request a good harvest. The belief was that, once lit, the Chinese Lanterns would float up to the heavens to be closer to their gods’ ears who would hear and hopefully grant their wishes for a healthy crop and bountiful harvest. A natural progression then ensued to utilise Chinese Lanterns as a way of thanking the gods for their blessings at wedding ceremonies. This tradition has lasted for centuries and remains very strong today. 

 

However, whilst this tradition started out in Asian cultures, the use of Chinese Lanterns at wedding ceremonies has been adopted worldwide which is why you will now see traditional white Chinese Lanterns often used for formal weddings along with coloured flying lanterns for less formal weddings. Whilst Flying Lanterns can be traced back in history for their use as a signaling tool in war, they are now very much a symbol of peace and good fortune and are a wonderful way of creating a beautiful and memorable addition to any occasion or event.
